Great season start - now the Vern Curnow shield and Country champs
It is terrific to see lots of new athletes competing in the first 2 months of competition at the Joe Carmody track in Newborough. It is especially fantastic to see many new faces that have come to us from the local Little Athletics. Your enthusiasm rubs off on other athletes and our Committee and Officials.
The season now moves to the main 'summer' part, firstly with 3 Vern Curnow Shield event nights and then leading up to the Victorian Country Athletics competition in Bendigo.
Vern Curnow is a life member of Athletics Victoria and the Gippsland Athletics club, he still officiates when possible. The shield in his name began in 2008/9 and brings together the 4 senior athletics clubs in the Gippsland region - Gippsland Athletics, South Coast Athletics, Wellington Athletics and Traralgon Harriers. The first 3 years of the VC shield were won by South Coast, before Wellington started to dominate in the most recent 3 years. More detail is found on the VC Shield page.
January is also the month of the Victorian Country Athletics championships, held on Fri 23rd Jan to Sun 25th Jan, 2015 - the pinnacle event of the season for many of our athletes. This will be in Bendigo, and entries with Aths Victoria close strictly on 11th January. Please note you must have full club uniform and Aths Vic rego number to compete. Please speak to any of the Gippsland Athletics officials for more information.
