Newborough Athletics Track upgrade postponed until March 2014

Latrobe City has finally confirmed that they have made the sensible decision to postponed their planned upgrade of the Joe Carmody Athletics Track in Newborough until March 2014. Work on the track is anticipated to take place from March 17 2014 for about 6 weeks.

Resultantly, the 2013/14 season for the Gippsland Athletics Club will begin, as usual, on the first Tuesday following the School holidays (Oct 8) and run unaffected through to the Gippsland Pentathlon championship in early March 2014.

Australian Record!!

E-mail Print PDF

Huge congratulations to Gippsland Athletic Club member Terry O’Neill who has set a new Australian 55plus age group Record for a 6hr walk.

The 6hr walk an annual Championship event held at Coburg Athletic track, attracts athletes from all around Australia was held on February 23rd, with a 6 00am start it meant rising at 4 00am to prepare for the event.

Terry walked 53.78 km to pass the previous record by 120 meteres.

He said it was in the back of his mind leading into the event,  but knew everything had to go well, after a good start and still feeling strong after 3hrs he set himself to chase the record, despite going through a difficult hour from 3hr 30 to 4hr 30 he was able to pick up the pace again and finish strongly. He said he was receiving great encouragement from fellow athletes on the track as they realized he was on target to achieve the record.

He was chasing the record 2 years ago but just fell short, he said he did not want to just miss out again, he did not find out until 30min after the event, at the presentation that he had broken the record.

Terry now holds the Australian 50plus and 55plus age group record for the 6hr event.
